12/29/22…for the inspiration

On a Flight at the United Pegasus Foundation, Tehachapi, California

There are so many beautiful places and beautiful faces in our precious world.  Towering mountains, glittering oceans, smiles lit by love and animals stunning to see.  There are so many people working tirelessly to save our wild places and to rescue and care for the wildlife and other animals that make our world awe-inspiring.

I am excited to tell you about one organization and its inspirational founder, Helen Meredith.  The United Pegasus Foundation is one of the first and largest Thoroughbred horse rescues in California.  The nonprofit’s mission is to provide a safe haven for horses coming off the racetracks and other horses in need.  Over the years, thousands of horses have been helped.

Helen Meredith’s love of horses started in her youth in England.  She worked as an assistant trainer and then as a jockey in France.  After moving to Southern California in the late 1980’s she learned of the cruel fate of so many of these beloved and hard-working Thoroughbreds.  Initially saving horses in her backyard, Helen soon grew the rescue into an organization which now cares for over 130 beautiful animals! Many of these horses are elder animals or have had serious injuries in the past.  They have survived on perseverance and trust.  Helen, her staff, volunteers, and supporters return to them the promise that they will be forever loved and cared for.

The symbol of Pegasus, the horse with wings who flew to the top of Mount Olympus and who has a constellation of stars named after him, represents this organization’s limitless dedication to the horses, even in the face of tremendous obstacles.  Helen is currently moving all the horses from two locations into one larger sanctuary to increase the ease of oversight and reduce operational costs. The United Pegasus Foundation is riding out the tail end of our global pandemic, with costs skyrocketing for hay, veterinary care, construction materials and everything else needed to care for so many special animals. Grants received are not enough to meet all their needs so the organization is grateful for individual donors who help to provide additional funds so that these magnificent horses will have a lifetime of safety and care.

It was an honor to photograph these extraordinary animals and to learn about the work that Helen and the United Pegasus Foundation has been doing to save these beloved horses. I will forever be inspired by Helen, and I hope she is an inspiration to you too!

If you are able, please consider making a donation, any amount helps them greatly.
